Follow the Bride: 2011 Reception Trends

Last week I attended my first bridal show. I guess it would have been more helpful to meet with new vendors and search for great ideas earlier in the game, but I was still able to learn a few new things. Here are a few trends I spotted:

Hot pepper will literally spice up your wedding cake.

Create a Cultural Cake: Draw flavor inspiration from your heritage. According to NY-based cake designer Michelle Doll Cakes, Mexican Hot Chocolate, a cake flavor made with cayenne pepper, is growing in popularity. For the Italian in me, they suggested vanilla cake with cannoli filling. Yes, please!

Check out the belts on those 2011 bridesmaid dresses. I'd wear that accessory again!

Belt it Out: The best way to add details to your wedding look is to add a belt. At the show, Jenny Yoo presented her 2011 collection which featured a selection of handmade belts and sashes. I fell in love with them all, but my favorites included satin ribbon, crystal embellishments and fabric flowers. Don’t need a belt? Tie one on your bridesmaids in a color that matches their dresses.

Blooms in a bag are perfect for a spring wedding. These are from Navy & Lavender.
Do Your Guests a Favor: I see a lot of couples make a charitable donation in lieu of traditional favors and I think that’s great. But why not send your guests home with a reminder that you’ve made a contribution in their name? Wedding gift and favor company Navy & Lavender suggests planting a tree for every one of your guests (visit unicef.org) and handing out customized packages of flower or herb seeds with a note. Or, make a donation to the American Heart Association. Create a tag explaining your gift and tie it to a bag of heart shaped candies or chocolates.

Which of these trends will you try? What new ideas are bringing to your wedding reception?

Love the belt look. Definitely a good look, esp for your wedding!

And love love love the donation favors. FABULOUS idea!!! You could even tie the card announcing the "tree donation" to a bag of seeds for guests to plant something themselves...

Love the idea about giving your guests something to take home even if you're giving a donation... Maybe i'll give all my guests dog treats since their furry friends couldn't come to the party ;)

Love the belt idea as well. And...kind of as a tie-in to both of your comments, my sister did a similar idea in terms of donation favors - she donated to the Humane Society in honor of her furry friend. I loved that!

These belted dresses are so cute. The cafe color is soothing.
